Living Ministry Research Project

Chaplains, incumbents, priests-in-charge, ordained local ministers, diocesan officers, bishops, archdeacons, rural deans, curates, assistant ministers, ministers in secular employment, pioneers, theological educators, administrators, church planters, team vicars, stipendiary ministers, self-supporting ministers, house-for-duty ministers, ministers with permission to officiate… The 20,400 ministers currently ordained in the Church of England perform a vast array of roles in widely differing contexts. How do they move through their ministry and live their vocation?

Researchers in the CofE's Ministry Division are undertaking an exciting new research project to understand the journeys clergy make through training and ordained ministry. Building on the Experiences of Ministry Project and the Vocational Pathways research, Living Ministry will track ministers from four cohorts, returning at regular intervals to find out what and how they are doing. Asking the key question, ‘what enables ministers to flourish in ministry?’ the project will explore clergy wellbeing and effectiveness and, in particular, how these relate to ministerial training and development.

The Living Ministry project is supported by a Stakeholder Group, ensuring it benefits from a range of perspectives, and an Advisory Group for consultation on concepts and methods.

Living Ministry is an exciting piece of extended research conducted by the Ministry Division with potential to be of huge benefit both to clergy and to the wider church.
