Policy & Guidance
Ministry Development in the Church of England is championed by a national Continuing Ministerial Development (CMD) Panel. The Panel is responsible for monitoring the House of Bishops’ policy, producing formal guidance and providing advice and support to dioceses, as it relates to licensed ministers. The practice of CMD by all licensed ministers, lay and ordained, is strongly commended in a range of policy documents and statements.
The House of Bishops in December 2014 endorsed the following three strategic aims for the Panel’s work:
To establish a robust evidence base as to the nature of an ‘effective ministerial presence’, lay and ordained
To foster a culture of innovation and experimentation in CMD provision with a view to learning how to more adequately support the transformation of ministry within the whole church.
To support the development (and establishment) of effectively resourced practitioner communities able to own and deliver in relation to particular standards of excellence in CMD
These functions and strategic aims for the Panel are intended to make a significant contribution to the Ministry Council’s priorities, set out in Transforming Ministry, namely supporting:
A step-change in CMD across the dioceses
You can find on these pages research reports and case studies commissioned or undertaken by the Panel and more formal guidance on practice. If there's anything obviously missing please do feel free to get in touch. Many thanks.
